This card is from SVS Basic Perspective.

This lesson is about basic 2 point perspective, starting from 2 points on a plane and making boxes, duplicating boxes, etc. This was also a lesson for me in Photoshop just trying to get the right tools to help me make the scene. I’m happy with my progress there. The basic concept of 2 point perspective is fairly easy for me at this point, but it’st still a good reminder of setting up the scene properly, then you can add things. Such as adding a person this time! I enjoyed this, and yes I am still slow at this when trying to be precise, so it took me an hour.

Next time I will go in with a plan for a scene that I want to draw so it’s a better drawing and not just boxes. Maybe find a city scene to sketch?

This card is from SVS Intro to Prop Design.

This lesson is about working through a process of very rough sketches and working up to a finished sketch of a prop, all using the questions and design inspiration from reference. I feel like I did ok with this and came up with a nice design, but I need to push myself more next time to really explore variations of shape and proportion. I wanted a simple design, but maybe it would be good to also work with a more ornate design so I get more out of it

Next time I will work on other objects for Gren’s world. But I should also explore more ‘timelines’ or worlds to work with more ornate objects. I happened to choose a simple design style, which makes some things easier.

This card is from SVS Intro to Prod Design.

This lesson is about doing the right kind of thinking and searching to help you design a prop. By going through a list of questions about what, why and who the prop is for, you help your design process. The prop will have the design it needs for this purpose and not just because you found a cool reference. I had a fun time doing this, and it helped me to think about things more. I have a bad habit of sitting down to draw, thinking, oh, I guess I put a chair over here, and just draw some random thing, often drawing it poorly because I don’t really know what I’m trying to draw, I’m just making it up on the spot. This exercise will really help with this. I can build a library of props for my character or world, then move on to another character or world. So when I sit down to draw, I have a library of objects in mind.

Next time I will do another object in this world. The class final is to build a whole suite of props: chair, table, lamp, drinking vessel, and reading material. This is a great activity to do even if I’m not able to draw at the time.

I did 15 minutes answering questions and writing up answers and then 45 minutes to compile reference photos for design.

This card is from SVS Magic of Color.

This lesson is about color blending going from two different colors and white and black. This one is tricky. I need to do more examples of blending into black and white. I think I could be doing better with the steps to make them more even. One thing I just remembered is that it might help to have a grayscale for comparison, just to have something to compare my values to. The two color is also tricky because one corner is light, where as in the one-color exercise, the whole bottom row is white. Overall, this went well but I think a few of my squares are off. You can see it more when I reduce the size of the image.

Next time I will change the file to include a grayscale on the side for reference. I’ll also go back to a single color for more practice before trying two colors again.

This card is from SVS Learn Freaky Friday Draw Along.

This is not really a lesson, just a draw-along session, but we do learn along the way. It’s a good chance to do something different, and we never know what we are going to draw. I was not sure about including these in lesson time, but it is a valuable session and it’s better if I treat it as a class that I need to attend.

Next time I will do some warmups before class, I was a little rough
