This lesson is about doing the right kind of thinking and searching to help you design a prop. By going through a list of questions about what, why and who the prop is for, you help your design process. The prop will have the design it needs for this purpose and not just because you found a cool reference. I had a fun time doing this, and it helped me to think about things more. I have a bad habit of sitting down to draw, thinking, oh, I guess I put a chair over here, and just draw some random thing, often drawing it poorly because I don’t really know what I’m trying to draw, I’m just making it up on the spot. This exercise will really help with this. I can build a library of props for my character or world, then move on to another character or world. So when I sit down to draw, I have a library of objects in mind.

Next time I will do another object in this world. The class final is to build a whole suite of props: chair, table, lamp, drinking vessel, and reading material. This is a great activity to do even if I’m not able to draw at the time.

I did 15 minutes answering questions and writing up answers and then 45 minutes to compile reference photos for design.
