This card is from SVS Learn Basic Perspective class.
This lesson is about how to draw ellipses in perspective. This is the first time I have looked at ellipses not just as ovals in a square, but actually looking at how the ellipse is a circle represented in 2D space. I have been trying to draw tires on cars for a while and I just don’t understand them, they are really hard for me to conceptualize. And because I don’t understand them, my drawings of tires are pretty bad! But this lesson gets into how to think about the circle as it rotates away from the viewer, and how you need to use the minor axis to find the major axis. It’s still very difficult for me, but I think it’s one of those things that will come with time and practice.
Next time I will do this lesson digitally so I can draw on top of a reference image and use the circle tools to check my work. Even though this is a drawing lesson, the bigger lesson for me is learning the concept and being able to see things better and understand it.
Ball point pen on letter size copy paper.
I did 45 minutes following the lesson, taking lots of notes and doing a few examples. I am stopping here because I really think I need to figure this out more digitally.
